Natural Hair Routine Recipes

Every hair is different, which means every care routine is different. Because many needs vary, we have bundled some of our recipes for a natural hair routine. This way, you can create your ideal botanical hair routine based on your own hair preferences. In this blog, read how to make a stimulating rosemary pre-treatment, an apple cider vinegar hair rinse, and hydrating flaxseed gel. Happy washing!

Hair routine step 1: rosemary pre-treatment

This pre-treatment, also known as pre-wash or pre-poo (derived from shamPOO), is used before you wash your hair. The star of this recipe is rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), which means sea-dew, how romantic! This plant has a purifying effect on the scalp and also stimulates blood circulation, thus contributing to hair growth. This powerful herb is incorporated as a macerate and essential oil in this recipe. The cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil is packed with antioxidants and hydrates your hair and scalp.

What do you need?
Organic dried rosemary
Organic olive oil (extra virgin)
A clean (preserving) jar
Optional: organic rosemary essential oil

Fill half a jar with dried herbs, then top it up with extra virgin olive oil. Leave the jar in a dark place for at least 4 weeks, shaking occasionally. After 4 weeks, strain the oil into a clean bottle, then optionally add rosemary essential oil (max 2% of the total oil weight).

For best results, apply this mask the evening before you wash your hair. Massage it into your scalp and apply to the lengths of your hair. Protect your bedding from the oil: Sleep with an old towel or t-shirt around your hair, or use a shower cap and sleep on an old pillowcase. With such a nourishing oil mask, it may be helpful to wash your hair twice in one shower to thoroughly rinse out the oil, depending on your hair type.

By macerating the herbs in the oil, the oil absorbs the properties of the plants. This gives you an extra fine mask: nourishing and conditioning due to the oil, strengthening and stimulating due to the rosemary. For an extra boost, you can add rosemary essential oil.

Hair routine step 2: natural shampoo

Why tinker with shampoo by adding synthetic ingredients when you can rely on the power of nature? We already had herbal shampoo and honey shampoo, but now also unscented clean shampoo and stimulating rosemary shampoo. For each shampoo, we have selected a bundle of herbs to naturally care for your hair. Check them out here!

Hair routine step 3: apple cider vinegar hair rinse

After washing your hair, this hair rinse with organic apple cider vinegar, rosemary, nettle, and chamomile ensures that your hair cuticles close. This prevents your hair from tangling and damaging easily and makes it shinier. By infusing herbs in apple cider vinegar, you make the hair rinse and hair routine extra powerful, super fun, and simple! Choose your herbs based on their effect: nettle helps with hair loss, rosemary improves scalp circulation, and chamomile is soothing for your scalp. You can optionally add your favorite essential oil for the scent and additional effect of the rinse.

Recipe:
Use a sterile jar and fill it to the brim with your favorite herbs
Fill the jar with apple cider vinegar until the herbs are submerged.
Let it steep for a minimum of two and a maximum of four weeks at room temperature.
Strain it and pour it into a (dark) bottle, then optionally add a few drops of essential oil. Ready to use! The herbal vinegar lasts for over a year.
After washing: fill an empty clean (sauce) bottle or cup with 1/10th vinegar rinse and the rest with water, then distribute it over your hair and rinse it out.

Hair routine step 4: hydrating flaxseed gel

Did you know that if you boil flaxseed with water, you create a hydrating and also shaping gel for your hair? Flaxseed is nourishing for your hair, containing omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B1 and B2, antioxidants, and various minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium.

The recipe:
3 tablespoons whole flaxseed (organic)
300 ml boiling water
Optional for shelf life: vitamin E

Add the flaxseed to the boiling water, let it boil for about 5-8 minutes (depending on how thick you want it) until it starts to thicken and become slimy.
Remove from heat, let stand for 30 minutes to 1 hour, then it will thicken further and cool down.
Strain it through a cheesecloth or pantyhose to squeeze out all the liquid. Optionally add a little vitamin E oil for shelf life and pour it into a clean jar or pump bottle. It can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.
